Pakeezah (पाकिजा) which translates to Pure of Heart is an extraordinary musical melodrama written, produced and directed by Kamal Amrohi. Pakeezah was released on 4 February 1972, 14 years after it first began. This film was Kamal Amrohi's expresion of his love for his wife, the legendary Indian actress Meena Kumari as he wanted to make a film worthy of her as an actress.

The film tells the story of a courtesan tawaif in the muslim Lucknow at the turn of the 20th century and of her aspirations to be loved, accepted and respected by society.

This film is considered a classic and has a status that matches the Indian cinema magnum opus, Mughal-E-Azam.
